Additionally, while under the guidance of Dr. Shondrika Burrell, Olisa is actively engaged as a trainee in the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Research Traineeship program, where Dr. Samendra Sherchan serves as his principal investigator. For Summer 2024, Olisa will travel with Sherchan to Nepal under the NSF-Interanational Research Experience for Students grant where he will undergoes research in wastewater treatment. In this capacity, Olisa is venturing in the integration of environmental practices and artificial intelligence into science education. Olisa has utilized platforms such as Kahoot! to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. Moreover, Olisa has demonstrated progress in fundraising through platforms like DonorsChoose to secure resources and support for his educational initiatives. Juggling these roles as an educator, scholar, and innovator, Olisa’s goal is to contribute to the significant advancements in science education.
Menakaya received up to $1,000, as a recipient of the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award, to be used to attend the NSTA National Conference on Science Education. Recipients were invited to attend a variety of workshops and presentations that are of particular interest to new teachers at the national conference. In addition, awardees were honored during a special evening celebration at NSTA’s National Conference in Denver, Colorado, on March 22.
